Suppose you have two permutation matrices $X$ and $Y$. The approximate degree used in colamd and symamd is based on. For details on the algorithms used by colamd and symamd, see. You can change various parameters associated with details of the algorithms using the spparms function.įor details on the algorithms used by colmmd and symmmd, see. This is true particularly for very large matrices. colamd and symamd are faster than colmmd and symmmd, respectively. They generate orderings that are as good as could be obtained using exact degrees. colamd and symamd use a tighter approximation than colmmd and symmmd.Factorizations obtained using colmmd and symmmd tend to have more nonzero elements than if the implementation used exact degrees.colamd and colmmd also work for symmetric matrices of the form A*A' or A'*A.īecause the most time-consuming part of a minimum degree ordering algorithm is keeping track of the degree of each node, all four functions use an approximation to the degree, rather the exact degree. MATLAB functions implement two methods for each of two types of matrices: symamd and symmmd for symmetric matrices, and colamd and colmmd for nonsymmetric matrices. It is a complicated and powerful algorithm that usually leads to sparser factors than most other orderings, including column count and reverse Cuthill-McKee. The minimum degree algorithm generates an ordering based on how these degrees are altered during Gaussian elimination or Cholesky factorization. This is the same as the number of off-diagonal nonzero elements in the corresponding row of the adjacency matrix. The degree of a node in a graph is the number of connections to that node. This ordering is useful for matrices that come from one-dimensional problems or problems that are in some sense "long and thin." The function symrcm(A) actually operates on the nonzero structure of the symmetric matrix A + A', but the result is also useful for asymmetric matrices. It is not guaranteed to find the smallest possible bandwidth, but it usually does. The reverse Cuthill-McKee ordering is intended to reduce the profile or bandwidth of the matrix. The second output argument from sort is the permutation that sorts this vector. sort sorts the values in ascending order.full converts this vector to full storage format. The sum function sums down the columns of the matrix, producing a vector that contains the count of nonzeros in each column. The inner call to spones creates a sparse matrix with ones at the location of every nonzero element in S.The colperm M-file has only a single line. The function p = colperm(S) computes this column-count permutation. This is sometimes a good reordering for matrices with very irregular structures, especially if there is great variation in the nonzero counts of rows or columns. The simplest such reordering is to sort the columns by nonzero count. Reordering the rows and columns can often make its Cholesky, factors sparser. Reordering the columns of a matrix can often make its LU or QR factors sparser. You can compute the inverse of p with r(p) = 1:n. To convert between the two representations, let I = speye(n) be an identity matrix of the appropriate size. The vector representation is slightly more compact and efficient, so the various sparse matrix permutation routines all return full row vectors with the exception of the pivoting permutation in LU (triangular) factorization, which returns a matrix compatible with earlier versions of MATLAB. If P is a sparse matrix, then both representations use storage proportional to n and you can apply either to S in time proportional to nnz(S). For example, the statements S(p,:) and P*S produce ![]() You can now try some permutations using the permutation vector p and the permutation matrix P. A permutation vector p, which is a full vector containing a permutation of 1:n, acts on the rows of S as S(p,:), or on the columns as S(:,p).A permutation matrix P acts on the rows of S as P*S or on the columns as S*P'.Sparse Matrices (Mathematics) MathematicsĪ permutation of the rows and columns of a sparse matrix S can be represented in two ways: ![]() If investment "A" returned 60%, investment "B" returned 3% and Investment "C" returned 15%, collectively, they returned about 26%, BUT. Just a small percentage of Vietnamese people use rhino horn for any purpose at all, says Michele Thompson, a professor of Southeast Asian history at Southern Connecticut State University who authored the 2015 book, Vietnamese Traditional Medicine: A Social History. “In fact, traditional Chinese medicine never has used rhinoceros horn as an aphrodisiac: This is a myth of the Western media and in some parts of Asia is viewed as a kind of anti-Chinese hysteria.” Eric Dinerstein, who served as the chief scientist at the WWF for 25 years, summed up the issue in his 2003 book, The Return of the Unicorns: The Natural History and Conservation of the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros. But experts say neither Chinese nor Vietnamese traditional medicine ever viewed rhino horn as an aphrodisiac to boost flagging libidos. To be clear, rhino horn has historically been used as a traditional medicinal ingredient in countries such as China and Vietnam. But such usage is now, rather incredibly, being documented in Vietnam as the media myth turns full circle," according to the TRAFFIC report. “Use of rhino horn as an aphrodisiac in Asian traditional medicine has long been debunked as a denigrating, unjust characterization of the trade by Western media. Other conservationists have also criticized media outlets for incorrectly tying the aphrodisiac issue so exclusively to Asian traditional medicine or folk therapies. The TRAFFIC report even implies the Vietnamese buyers who believe in rhino horn’s aphrodisiac powers may have picked up on a media obsession with the idea. Slogans compare rhino horn with “a luxury car,” tout its ability to “improve concentration and cure hangovers,” and trumpet “rhino horn with wine is the alcoholic drink of millionaires.” Popular Vietnamese Web sites mix unproved medical claims with luxury sales pitches. Black market dealers have also pushed the idea-supposedly sparked by local media gossip-that rhino horn can cure cancer and other life-threatening diseases. The Vietnamese black market exemplifies how “urban myth and dubious hype” can encourage demand for rhino horn products-as both medicinal and status-boosting luxury products-the TRAFFIC report says. "But it’s not the widespread demand driving the rhino horn trade.” “I would never say that (aphrodisiac) is never a use, because I’m sure people buy into the myth,” says Leigh Henry, senior policy advisor on species conservation and advocacy at the WWF. Overall, conservationists say there is no sweeping aphrodisiac craze driving lust for rhino horn. This example stands out because it is rare, however. That group also included some men who also apparently believed rhino horn could cure impotence and enhance sexual performance. A 2012 report by TRAFFIC International, the World Wildlife Fund's trade monitoring program, described how wealthy Vietnamese and Asian expatriate business elites in Vietnam would “routinely mix rhino horn powder with water or alcohol as a general health and hangover-curing tonic”-an extravagant version of a detox routine. There is one group of buyers in Vietnam that may partially reflect the stereotype of horny Asians seeking a rhino horn fix. Most of the desire for rhino horn seems unrelated to any wish for a raging hard-on, experts say. A modern market for rhino horn necklaces, bracelets and beads has also sprung up. Wealthy buyers bid for antique rhino horn carvings such as cups or figurines to display or as investments. Some purchase horn chunks or powder for traditional medicinal purposes, to ingest or to give others as an impressive gift. Certain buyers in Vietnam and China-the largest and second-largest black market destinations respectively-covet rhino horn products for different reasons. These days the main threat to the surviving rhinos comes from the illegal rhino horn trade between Africa and Asia. Historically rhino populations were decimated by uncontrolled trophy hunting during the European colonial era. ![]() ![]() The reality behind the demand is far more complex. But this prurient tidbit overlooks the main factors driving the illegal rhino horn trade-and may even be reinforcing false beliefs about the substance’s powers. Mainstream media coverage blamed its usual suspects: Asian men who supposedly buy rhino horn as a crude form of Viagra. The brazen slaying and dehorning of an endangered white rhino in a wildlife preserve near Paris last month spurred widespread outrage. Only two females remain, pushing the subspecies closer to extinction. Editor’s Note (3/20/18): This article is being resurfaced following the death of Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino. ![]() Although they do not specifically mention Graphical Analysis Pro, these experiments offer excellent opportunities to incorporate the app into your teaching. ![]() On August 1, we will be offering a free webinar that highlights ways to use the app’s advanced features with some of our most popular Go Direct physics sensors to explore force, motion, and sound.Īhead of the webinar, I’m sharing three experiments that are great for hands-on physics learning. Terman used the test not only to help identify children with learning difficulties but also to find children and adults who had above average levels of intelligence. Terman, a psychologist at Stanford University, was one of the first to create a version of the test for people in the United States, naming the localized version the Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scale. One of the first intelligence tests, the Binet–Simon test quickly gained support in the psychological community, many of whom further spread it to the public. Wallace Wallin in the December 1911 issue of the journal The Psychological Clinic (volume 5 number 7), public domain Reproduction of an item from the 1908 Binet–Simon intelligence scale, that shows three pairs of pictures, and asks the tested child, "Which of these two faces is the prettier?" Reproduced from the article "A Practical Guide for Administering the Binet–Simon Scale for Measuring Intelligence" by J. Because this testing method merely compares a person's ability to the common ability level of others their age, the general practices of the test can easily be transferred to test different populations, even if the measures used are changed. The children's highest levels of achievement were sorted by age and common levels of achievement considered the normal level for that age. Failing to find a single identifier of intelligence, Binet and Simon instead compared children in each category by age. A wide range of children were tested on a broad spectrum of measures in an effort to discover a clear indicator of intelligence. To create their test, Binet and Simon first created a baseline of intelligence. Binet believed that intelligence is malleable and that intelligence tests would help target children in need of extra attention to advance their intelligence. Due to changing education laws of the time, Binet had been requested by a government commission to come up with a way to detect children who were falling behind developmentally and in need of help. The Binet–Simon scale was created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet and his student Theodore Simon. In 1916, at Stanford University, the psychologist Lewis Terman released a revised examination that became known as the Stanford–Binet test.Īs discussed by Fancher & Rutherford in 2012, the Stanford–Binet is a modified version of the Binet–Simon Intelligence scale. As Binet indicated, case studies might be more detailed and helpful, but the time required to test many people would be excessive. ![]() It was initially created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet, who, following the introduction of a law mandating universal education by the French government, began developing a method of identifying "slow" children, so that they could be placed in special education programs, instead of labelled sick and sent to the asylum. The test originated in France, then was revised in the United States. The development of the Stanford–Binet initiated the modern field of intelligence testing and was one of the first examples of an adaptive test. The five factors being tested are knowledge, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial processing, working memory, and fluid reasoning. The test measures five weighted factors and consists of both verbal and nonverbal subtests. It is a cognitive-ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in young children, in contrast to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). It is now in its fifth edition (SB5), which was released in 2003. The Stanford–Binet Intelligence Scales (or more commonly the Stanford–Binet) is an individually administered intelligence test that was revised from the original Binet–Simon Scale by Alfred Binet and Théodore Simon.
